Baixa or the Lisbon downtown, is an elegant neighborhood built after the great earthquake in 1775. The main boulevard is pedestrian only, a flat inviting shopping area. Some of the most important landmarks in this area include the Santa Justa elevator, built in 1902 to connect the lower part of the town with the higher part; the Racio train station is an important hub that connects Lisbon with its suburbs and the funicular that connects the Baixa district with Bairro Alto district.
